Field level contains sensors and actuators. Control level contains PLC/DCS controllers. Supervisory level contains HMI/SCADA servers and operator stations. Higher systems include historian, MES and business integration.
Separation of responsibility
Fast control should not depend on visualization PC. If HMI reboots, PLC must continue basic control. HMI is interface, not substitute for control logic.
